This family home was given a fresh look by overhauling the family room and stairwell, while the kitchen, living room and dining room received a update. A fresh coat of paint, new backsplash tiles and lighting in the kitchen, and new crisp white trim lightened up the whole main floor. Custom furniture in neutral tones were brought in and given pops of colour through the accessories. The client's former dining room set was given a new lease on life with a painted hutch and buffet and dark stained table and chairs for a more formal look. A classic, yet simple chandelier completes the look.

The stairs originally carpeted with traditional oak bannisters, have been updated with a more contemporary newel post and cap with iron balusters. Dark wood stained stairs complete the look. On the upper landing, the iron balusters create an open feel, replacing a pony wall above. Photo: Zoon Media

The kitchen was renovated a few years back by the homeowners and only needed a minor update. Neutral subway tiles replaced the once dark brown backsplash, while new recessed lighting combined with pendant lights over the island brightened the space in place of track lighting. Photo: Zoon Media

A pony wall was removed that separated the kitchen from the family room and the wood flooring creates a continuos flow throughout the main level. Though the family room was quite compact, the homeowners wanted to maximize the seating space for family and friends. The scaled down sectional chaise and a apartment sofa provide ample seating and were deliberately upholstered in different fabrics to avoid a "straight off the showroom floor" look. Since a coffee table could not fit into the space, a farmhouse bench was used. It's rustic top is family friendly and the shelf underneath provides storage for reading materials and remote controls. The front room and dining area were given a fresh coat of soft grey paint and the original floors were re-stained a dark cocoa. The homeowners original dining set in country pine was given an elegant makeover by staining the dining chairs and table a dark stain, while the hutch and buffet were painted a soft grey. The dining chairs were re-upholstered in a neutral coral reef patterned fabric that is actually an outdoor fabric. Diamond patterned upholstered arm chairs arranged in a circle around a tufted ottoman, create a cozy space for reading and after dinner discussions. Photo: Zoon Media
